8653 "Iron Cake" Xiaguan

Classification and Origin

Category: pressed factory pu-erh according to the màihào (唛号) system.

western Yunnan large-leaf material from Lincang (临沧), Baoshan, and adjacent areas.

the màihào (唛号) system, introduced for export accounting in 1976, turns four digits into a brief characterization of the product. The first two digits are the year the recipe was approved, the third is the grade (sort) of raw material (the smaller the number, the more tender the leaf), the fourth is the factory according to the export code. Factory codes: 1 — Kunming (中茶), 2 — Menghai (大益), 3 — Xiaguan (下关), 4 — Pu'er. Hence, 8653: 1986 recipe, grade 5 raw material, factory No. 3 — Xiaguan.

an alphabetic shape marker is most often added to 8653 — T8653, where T indicates the "iron cake" tiě bǐng pressing. A four-digit number always means pressed tea; a five-digit one means loose tea.

Origin: Xiaguan Factory, Xiaguan Town (下关) — the southern gate of Dali in western Yunnan.

Type: sheng pu-erh (生, "green cake" qīng bǐng 青饼); "iron cake" form tiě bǐng (铁饼). Tuó (沱) are produced in both sheng and shu versions (生/熟).

Botany and Raw Material

8653 is a recipe (pīnpèi 拼配) tea, not a single-origin material from one village.

the fifth leaf grade means medium-coarse material: not the most tender buds, but not the coarsest tier either. This choice of raw material is deliberate: it gives the body density, a noticeable bitterness kǔ (苦) with a quick return of sweetness huí gān (回甘), and a structure designed for long-term transformation.

stability of profile from year to year, rather than hunting for a rare plot.
