Junshan Yinzhen

Classification and Origin

Category: 黄芽茶 (huángyá chá) — "yellow bud tea"; the raw material consists of single buds (单芽, dānyá). This is an exemplary 黄芽茶, the benchmark for the top, "bud" tier of the yellow tea scale.

divided by the tenderness of raw material into three tiers — 黄芽茶 (buds), 黄小茶 (small-leaf), and 黄大茶 (large-leaf); the unifying technological feature for all three remains the mènhuáng step.

Origin: Junshan Island (君山, Jūnshān, "Sovereign's Island") in Yueyang County (岳阳, Yuèyáng), Hunan Province (湖南), within the waters of Dongting Lake (洞庭湖).

Type: the only yellow tea (黄茶) in the canonical list of China's "Ten Famous Teas"; the flagship of the Yueyang yellow tea cluster.

Terroir

Junshan Island (君山, Jūnshān) in Yueyang County (岳阳, Yuèyáng), Hunan Province (湖南).

the island lies in the waters of Dongting Lake (洞庭湖), and this aquatic environment creates a special microclimate — high humidity, soft mists, and diffused light over the water's surface. It is precisely this regime that yields tender, slowly growing buds suitable for a tea made from just a single, unopened leaf.

the Yueyang region plays a key role in the entire yellow tea category — according to source estimates, it accounts for about 70% of China's yellow tea production. Junshan Yinzhen is the flagship of this cluster, which also includes neighboring yellow small-leaf teas, such as 北港毛尖 (Běigǎng máojiān, Beigang Maojian) from the Kangwang Township of the same county.

Organoleptic Profile

杏黄明亮 (xìnghuáng míngliàng) — "apricot-yellow, bright, and transparent."

甘醇甜爽 (gānchún tiánshuǎng) — sweet, soft, mellow, and refreshing at the same time. This is not green sharpness or harshness, but a calm, honeyed fullness, typical for a successful yellow tea.

the golden body of the bud under a layer of silvery down — hence the nickname 金镶玉 ("gold inlaid with jade").

the phenomenon of 三起三落 (sān qǐ sān luò), "three rises and three falls" — when covered with hot water, the buds first stand vertically, rise to the surface, then slowly sink, and the cycle repeats several times until the buds array themselves upright at the bottom like a "forest of needles."
