Classification and Origin
Liubao tea is a dark tea (hēichá, 黑茶) from the mountain township of Liubao (六堡) and the adjacent areas of Cangwu (苍梧) under Wuzhou (梧州).
Origin: eastern Guangxi; the same area as all Liubao tea.
Type: chóng chá (虫茶 / 虫屎茶) — "insect tea," a niche product on the very fringe of the Liubao catalogue, marked as a rarity and local tradition (特异), not as a graded 六堡.
Botany and Raw Material
not a tender bud, but the coarsest, most mature and cheapest leaf — processed old leaf (老叶, lǎo yè).
there is no separate cultivar; the same local variety type is used as for other Liubao tea — Guangxi large- and medium-leaf population varieties (大中叶), yielding a massive, thick leaf prone to deep fermentation.
