Classification and Origin

Category: Liubao (六堡茶), farmer-style line 农家茶 (古法); within this line, sheqian occupies the earliest, most tender position.

refers to the ancient agricultural calendar. The day of the spring "she" (春社) is a festival of worshiping the earth god, tied to the beginning of spring; tea harvested before this date is called 社前茶. This makes it even earlier than the well-known 明前 (pre-Qingming) tea: the very first buds, barely beginning to grow and having accumulated a maximum of soluble substances over the winter, are taken from the bush. Hence sheqian's reputation as the highest-grade raw material in terms of tenderness within the farmer-style Liubao tradition.

Origin: Cangwu County and the surrounding area of Wuzhou (梧州) in eastern Guangxi.

Type: dark (post-fermented) tea — 黑茶.

Botany and Raw Material

in terms of the farmer-style Liubao gradation, such tenderness corresponds to the upper part of the seasonal-grade spectrum of 农家茶, where the material ranges from bud harvests (芽尖) through medium leaf (中叶) to coarse autumn leaf (粗老). Sheqian is the earliest and most bud-heavy edge of this spectrum, the opposite of, for example, autumn 老茶婆 (lǎochápó) made from mature leaves harvested during the Shuangjiang period (霜降, "Descent of Frost", shuāngjiàng).

local large- and medium-leaf populations traditionally used in the Liubao zone; it is the large/medium leaf (大中叶) that provides the richness upon which the "thick and aged" character of this tea is built over time.

Picking: sheqian is harvested from the most tender spring buds before she day — this is its defining characteristic regarding raw material.

Terroir

the homeland of Liubao is Cangwu County and the surrounding area of Wuzhou (梧州) in eastern Guangxi, within a river basin historically connected to the "Tea Water Road" to Guangdong and further to Southeast Asia.

subtropical, humid, foggy low-mountain terrain, where the combination of warmth, high humidity, and diffuse light favors both the growth of the tea bush and the subsequent natural fermentation and maturation of the finished tea.

for farmer-style sheqian, early spring batches from plots where the first buds emerge early and uniformly are especially valuable.

Organoleptic Profile

sheqian presents a fresh, "high" profile: clean, transparent notes of 清香, light body, lively spring clarity. This is atypical for the common image of Liubao as an immediately "red-thick" drink — young farmer-style sheqian is closer to early-spring freshness.

the character changes radically — light fermentation and tender bud material unfold over time into the signature 槟榔香 (bīngláng xiāng) — the "betel-areca" note, which in the Liubao world serves as a marker of quality long-term aging. The infusion darkens, the body becomes denser, and the characteristic rounded depth of mature Liubao appears.
