Bingdao Laozhai

Classification and Origin

Category: Ancient-tree, single-mountain (单株 / 单寨) pressing — cakes (bǐng), bricks, or 沱.

冰岛老寨 (Bīngdǎo lǎozhài, "Bingdao Old Village"). The toponym 冰岛 literally translates as "Icy Island," though it has no relation to the geographical Iceland — it is a Chinese phonetic rendering of the local name.

Benchmark raw material of S+ tier; the village is called the "King of Lincang" (临沧之王), placing its status alongside the southern benchmark of power, 老班章. It is part of the informal quartet of Lincang peaks (临沧四小龙) together with 大雪山, 忙肺 and 昔归 (Xīguī).

Origin: Lincang Prefecture, Shuangjiang County (临沧·双江), western sub-slope of the Mengku mountain range (勐库西半山).

Type: 生普 (raw pu-er), raw segment of pu-er.

Botany and Raw Material

Local Mengku large-leaf variety of the Yunnan tea tree (Camellia sinensis var. assamica).

古树 (gǔshù, old trees). The old gardens of the western sub-slope are known for their large leaves, but — and this is the peculiarity of Bingdao — with an unusually soft taste profile.
