Jin Hua Liu Bao

Classification and Origin

Category: "golden-flower" variant of Liu Bao — a special (特色) high-segment product (高档); this is not an everyday tea, but a collectible and tasting tea, alongside aged bīngláng teas and vintage/warehouse-stored batches (年份茶 / 窖藏 / 老六堡).

within the tradition, two major lines coexist. The first is modern factory production (现代工艺, 厂茶) with cold water pile-fermentation (冷水渥堆), double steaming and double pressing (双蒸双压), and subsequent warehouse maturation (窖藏). The second is the old peasant method (古法农家茶) with light fermentation: ranging from the most delicate shèqián chá (社前茶) to coarse autumn lǎochápó (老茶婆, leaves picked around "Frost's Descent", 霜降), which is often boiled.

three — hóng nóng chén chún (红浓陈醇, "red, thick, aged, mellow"), bīnglángxiāng (槟榔香, betel nut aroma as a marker of quality aging), and jīnhuā (金花) itself.

"golden flowers" are a characteristic not of a specific grade or harvest class, but of a technological outcome; jīnhuā can be found in both compressed forms and loose tea.

Origin: Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, historically linked to the eponymous locality of Liu Bao in southern Guangxi.

Type: dark tea (hēichá).

Botany and Raw Material

for jīnhuā liùbǎo, factory or blended batches (厂/拼配) are typically used — the same material that goes into modern factory Liu Bao, ranging from large to medium-leaf raw material (大中叶).

jīnhuā are golden-yellow dots, colonies of the fungus Eurotium cristatum (in Chinese guāntū sǎnnáng jūn, 冠突散囊菌), visible to the naked eye. The same microorganism is responsible for the "flowering" in Fu Zhuan brick tea (茯砖, fúzhuān) — the most well-known "flowering" dark tea. Biologically, this is a beneficial, targeted strain, not a spoilage mold: evenly distributed, dense, golden colonies are a sign of successful fāhuā.

Terroir

Climate: Southern China's climate — humid, warm, with a pronounced monsoon cycle — shapes both the leaf's character and the very possibility of warehouse "maturation" of the tea.

Liu Bao is a geographically tied dark tea of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, historically linked to the eponymous locality in southern Guangxi.

Price and Authenticity

the main measurable parameter for jīnhuā liùbǎo is the density of "golden flowers". A group standard (团标) for this category sets a minimum content of Eurotium cristatum colonies: no less than 1.7 × 10⁶. This is a formal threshold, separating genuine "flowering" Liu Bao from tea with random or insufficient colonies. This is specifically a group/association standard for the "golden-flower" variant, not a general GB/T number for Liu Bao; specific state numbers are not cited here to avoid misleading the reader.
