White Magnolia Tea

Classification and Origin

Category: flower teas (花茶 huā chá).

white magnolia (白兰 báilán) — white michelia, white champaca (Michelia × alba), a plant related to true magnolias from the family Magnoliaceae. The flower is recognized by its narrow, elongated, creamy-white petals and its powerful, far-reaching fragrance.

what is often translated as "magnolia" in the Chinese tradition is báilán; the specific regional identity of a finished tea is typically defined not by where the flower grows, but by the tea production tradition.

Origin: Southern China — Guangdong Province (especially around Guangzhou), Fujian, Guangxi, southern Yunnan. Historically, the centers of flower tea scenting were Guangzhou, Fuzhou, Suzhou, and cities along the lower Yangtze.

Type: scented (flower) green tea.

Botany and Raw Material

usually a green tea, primarily 烘青绿茶 (hōngqīng lǜchá) — oven-dried (baked fixation) green tea. Such leaf possesses a loose, slightly porous structure that absorbs and retains the flower's volatile aromatic compounds well — this is a key technological requirement for the base of any huā chá. Versions on more delicate spring green teas are less common.

white magnolia is valued for its exceptional aromatic strength — its essential oils are so concentrated that a substantially smaller mass of flowers is required for scenting compared to when working with jasmine.

Brewing

about 80 – 85 °C; boiling water destroys delicate volatile compounds and makes the infusion coarse;

approximately 3 – 4 g per 150 ml;

1 – 2 minutes, then to taste with gradual lengthening;

Teaware: porcelain gaiwan (盖碗 gàiwǎn) or a glass tumbler — glass allows observation of the leaf unfurling;

Price and Authenticity

focus on the purity and liveliness of the smell, not on the number of visible flowers in the dry tea.

genuine white magnolia gives a dense, sweet-fruity, oily note; a sharp, "chemical," or soapy perfumery note is a warning signal.

examine the infusion and evaluate the leaf — it should look like normal green tea, even and whole, without an excess of dust and broken fragments.

in a good sample, the flower does not completely "overpower" the tea; a sensation of the green freshness of the base remains.

if the aroma is noticeably heavier, sweeter, and "fruitier" than jasmine — that is precisely the distinctive signature of báilán.

after brewing, high-quality tea should not leave behind a large amount of dried flowers — the aroma has "entered" the leaf, and the flowers themselves have been removed; an abundance of floral "crumbs" often indicates an attempt to mask weak scenting.
